Ingredients:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter (or you can use sunflower seed butter for allergies)

  • 1/3 cup honey or maple syrup

  • 1/4 cup ground flaxseed

  • 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • A pinch of salt

How to do it:

  1. Mix up the Base: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the rolled oats, peanut butter, honey, ground flaxseed, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir until everything is well incorporated. The mixture will be thick and sticky!

  2. Add the Fun: Gently stir in the mini chocolate chips.

  3. Chill the Dough: Cover the bowl and put it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. PRO TIP: This chilling step is crucial! It makes the dough much easier for little hands to handle and roll without sticking everywhere.

  4. Roll into Balls: Take the chilled dough out of the fridge. Let your child scoop up about a tablespoon of the mixture and roll it between their palms to form a ball. Place each finished ball on a plate or baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Set and Serve: Once all the balls are rolled, you can enjoy them immediately! You may keep leftovers in the fridge for up to a week if you store them in an airtight container.

Skill-Building Focus:

  • Fine Motor Skills: Scooping and rolling the dough is a phenomenal workout for the small muscles in the hands and fingers.

  • Sensory Play: The sticky, textured dough provides great tactile feedback.

  • Independence: This is a recipe kids can truly take the lead on with minimal adult help.

Customize It!

Let your child choose their own "add-in" to make it their own:

  • use the chocolate chips for dried cranberries or raisins.

  • put a sprinkle of cinnamon or cocoa powder to the mix.

  • Roll the balls that are done  in shredded coconut or extra ground flaxseed for a fun coating.
